Theme on Trees

This is a series of images that formed a successful application for the distinction of M.FIAP.

I had always been interested in the fascinating skeletal shapes of trees in the winter and during the winters of 1991-2 and 1992-3 I was fortunate to get suitable weather conditions for the project. These were winters with cold snaps with spectacular hoar frost and dense fog - ideal conditions for achieving simplicity in the subject matter.

The images were taken on either Kodak Technical Pan film, rated at ISO 8 and developed in very dilute Rodinal (1+100) or Kodak HIE Infrared film rated at ISO 400 and developed in Rodinal.

The images were printed on Agfa Record Rapid Grade 4 paper followed by split toning using a brief dip in ferricyanide bleach followed by thiourea toner.

The aim was to obtain warm toned high minor key images which created a gentle introspective panel of images.
